In this post we shall discuss about the signs, symptoms and clinical features of acute and chronic Empyema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empyema is the presence of pus in the pleural cavity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Clinical Features of Acute Empyema<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to Toxemia: <\/strong>Anorexia, sweats, malaise and loss of weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to Primary Disease: <\/strong>Sudden rise in temperature along with fever and rigors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to Mechanical Effect: <\/strong>Dyspnea, Cough, Chest Pain and Sputum<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Signs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edema of chest wall<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clubbing develops within 2-3 weeks of onset<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On percussion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stony dull percussion on involved side<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On inspection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bilaterally symmetrical chest<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asymmetric movement of chest on affected side<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Auscultation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absence of vocal resonance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diminished breath sounds on affected area<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amorphic bronchial breathing heard at apex of pleural effusion at interscapular region of the involved side<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Clinical Features of Chronic Empyema<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chest pain and fever<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anemia and loss of weight<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chronic sinus tracts in skin or lungs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deformity from fibrosis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clubbing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If bronchopleural fistula is present, air can be heard\/felt through a sinus during coughing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
