In this post we shall discuss some of the common infections caused by Staphylococcus Aureus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toxic shock syndrome<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toxic shock syndrome is a fatal multi system disease caused by S. Aureus strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It usually presents as fever, myalgia, diarrhea, rash, hypotension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is associated with infections of sequestrated or mucosal sites by Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin (TSST)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Exfoliative Diseases<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as Exfoliative toxin is responsible for Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ritters disease is the severe form of SSSS in new born<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toxic epidermal necrolysis is found in older patients<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mild forms are Pemphigus Neonatorum, Bullous Impetigo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Staphylococcal Food Poisoning<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It results on consumption of food contaminated with enterotoxic producing staphylococci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 hrs time period is required from the ingestions of contaminated food for enough enterotoxin to be produced and symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emetic effect is caused due to stimulation of CNS throught the receptors present in GIT<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toxin usually exhibits cytotoxic effects, thrombocytopenia, pyrogenic and mitogenic effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Skin and Soft Tissue Infections<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boils, styes, abscess, impetigo, carbuncles are the most common infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within wounds and burns Sepsis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Deep Infections<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central nervous system: Abscess, meningitis, and intracranial thrombophlebitis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Endovascular infections: Bacteraemia, septicaemia, pyaemia, and endocarditis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urinary infections: Staphylococci do cause urinary tract infections in association with local instrumentation, implants or diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respiratory infections: In the respiratory tract, it causes tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis, bronchopneumonia, lung abscess, empyema and rarely pneumonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musculoskeletal infections: Arthritis, tropical pyomyositis, Acute osteomyelitis<\/p>\n\n\n\n
